Maryam · Makki · ayah 74 of 98

Maryam 19:74

وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَحْسَنُ أَثَـٰثًا وَرِءْيًا

“And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Generations finer in furnishings and looks than any boaster were brought to nothing, so appearance proves nothing about who stands well with Allah.

A reflection

He loves beauty, not the sneer

Wa kam ahlaknā qablahum min qarnin: and how many a generation We destroyed before them. The We is the plural of majesty. The how many is left uncounted. Allah does not name these peoples or list their cities. He simply notes that there were many, and that each was finer in furnishings and looks than the men boasting in Makka.

The ego hears this and flinches, because pride in possessions is one of its favourite homes. My house, my car, my look. The ayah does not argue with that pride. It sets it beside a long row of earlier owners, all better equipped, all gone.

A reader may then take the wrong lesson. Is Allah against beautiful things? Should a pious life look shabby? The Prophet ﷺ answered this directly, as Sahih Muslim records. He said no one with a speck of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise. A man asked: but a person likes his clothes to be good and his sandals to be good. The Prophet ﷺ said that Allah is beautiful and loves beauty.

Then he defined arrogance. It is rejecting the truth and looking down on people.

Read that definition beside 19:73 and 19:74. The Makkan leaders heard clear verses and rejected them. Then they looked down on the poor believers and asked whose house was better. Both halves of the Prophet's ﷺ definition are there.

So this ayah is not a sermon against nice furniture. It answers the moment furniture becomes an argument against Allah, and appearance becomes a way of despising His servants.

The Majestic gave those earlier generations their beauty. He also took it back. A good garment is a gift to be thankful for. It was never a verdict.
