Maryam 19:73

“And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?"[824]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Clear verses are recited, and the reply compares houses and gatherings: the oldest dodge of a truth is asking who looks more successful.

A reflection

Our verses, and their living rooms

Wa idhā tutlā ʿalayhim āyātunā bayyinātin: and when Our verses are recited to them, clear. Notice the possessive. These are not a preacher's opinions. They are Our signs, spoken by the One who made the speakers, their houses and the hills around them.

And the reply to the Lord of the worlds is a question about property. Which of the two parties is better in standing, and finer in assembly? The listeners do not dispute a single word of what was recited. They simply change the subject to themselves.

That is the ego at work, and its name is arrogance. Arrogance does not always shout. Often it quietly moves the scale. It sets aside the measure Allah has given and holds up its own: the better address, the fuller room, the more admired friends.

One commentator sets out their argument with care. A wise Lord, they reasoned, would never leave His sincere friends in hardship and His enemies in comfort. Since we are comfortable and you are not, the truth cannot be with you. It sounds almost pious. It is still a man weighing the Majestic on the scales of his own living room.

The answer comes at once, in the next ayah. How many generations before them did Allah destroy, finer still in furnishings and looks? If wealth proved His love, He would never have ended the wealthy. If His friends could never suffer, His prophets would never have wept. Both premises fall, as the same commentator shows.

The Prophet ﷺ gave the measure plainly, as Sahih Muslim records. Allah does not look at your forms or your wealth. He looks at your hearts and your deeds.

So the doubt a reader may carry, that prosperity must mean favour, is answered by the Speaker Himself. His verses are the scale. Houses and gatherings are only what is being weighed.
