Maryam · Makki · ayah 82 of 98

Maryam 19:82

كَلَّا ۚ سَيَكْفُرُونَ بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ وَيَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضِدًّا

“No! They [i.e., those "gods"] will deny their worship of them and will be against them opponents [on the Day of Judgement].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Whatever was taken as a god for strength will not stay neutral: it will deny the worship and stand against the worshipper.

A reflection

Not merely useless, but turned against you

The usual picture of a false god is something inert. A stone that cannot help, a statue that cannot hear. Useless, perhaps pitiful, but at least harmless. The worst that can happen, on that picture, is that you wasted your devotion.

This ayah refuses the comfort of that picture. The false gods will not simply fail to help. They will deny their worship, and they will be against them.

A rhetorical commentary points out that the two ayat are built as mirror images. The gods were taken to be for them a source of strength, lahum ʿizzā. They will be against them an opposite, ʿalayhim ḍiddā. The preposition flips from for to against. The noun flips from strength to its contrary. The commentary says the opposite of honour is humiliation, so the meaning is: they will be a disgrace on them, not a strength for them.

Picture a man applying for a new job who lists his old manager as a referee. They worked together for six years; he defended the manager in more than one meeting. The recruiter rings. The manager says he barely remembers him, and would not like to comment. The silence on the line is worse than a refusal would have been.

That is the ayah's warning. What a heart leans on in place of Allah is not a neutral backup. On the day it is called to speak for you, it will either deny knowing you or speak against you.

Notice too that the ayah does not say the gods will merely fall silent. Silence would leave the worshipper alone with his choice. Denial goes further. It tells the room that the relationship was one-sided all along, that nothing was ever promised from the other end.

The question for any reader is simple. Which reference am I counting on?
