Al-Ahqaf 46:6

وَإِذَا حُشِرَ ٱلنَّاسُ كَانُوا۟ لَهُمْ أَعْدَآءً وَكَانُوا۟ بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ كَـٰفِرِينَ

“And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.”

Essence

On the Day everyone is gathered, whatever was worshipped instead of Allah turns hostile and denies it was ever worshipped at all.

A reflection

A road worn smooth to the wrong door

ʿIbāda, worship, comes from a root of lowliness, and the lexicons give it a vivid first picture. A road was called muʿabbad when so many feet had trodden it that it lay worn and level. It no longer resisted the foot. A camel tamed for errands was muʿabbad too. The image is established: worship is what you yield to, again and again, until the way to it is worn smooth.

So worship is not only a ritual. It is a road. Whatever you keep returning to, in need, in hope, in fear, slowly becomes a worn path in your life. The ayah describes the end of such a path. On the Day people are gathered, the one at the end of the road turns round and says: I never asked for this. The commentaries record the words the worshipped will use: we did not command them to worship us, and we were not even aware of it.

Picture a man in his fifties clearing out his late father's house. On the staircase the carpet is worn thin on one line, up to the door of the study. He wore that line himself as a boy and a young man, climbing to show his father every grade, every prize, every job offer. He never once heard 'well done'. Among the papers he finds a letter in which his father, years ago, had written to a friend: 'The boy is always seeking my approval. I never asked him to.'

The ayah asks you to look at your staircase. Which carpet is worn thin in your life? Whose approval, what comfort, which fear have you climbed towards a thousand times? If it is anything other than Allah, the road leads to a door that will one day deny you knew each other. Turn the next step, and the next, towards the One who never disowns those who come to Him.
