Al-Baqarah 2:159

“Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture - those are cursed by Allāh and cursed by those who curse,[58]”

Essence

Hiding guidance Allah has already made plain pushes people away from light, and pushes the one who hides it away too.

A reflection

The report marked 'not for circulation'

A hospital's internal review finds a pattern. Several patients on one ward were sent home too early, and two came back worse. The findings are clear. The report is stamped 'not for circulation' and filed. No one lies. No one has to. The truth simply stays in a drawer while the next patients are sent home.

The ayah describes the same move on a far larger scale. It speaks of those who conceal the clear proofs and guidance Allah sent down. They hide it 'after We made it plain for people in the Book'. Notice the timing: after it was made plain. A rhetorician among the classical commentators stresses this. Allah left no point of confusion in it. They took what was clear and summarised, hid it, and muddied it for others.

A classical theologian defines concealment with care. It is not merely failing to mention something. It is holding back what people need, when there is every reason to bring it out. That is why the ayah is so severe. Guidance is what people need most of all.

The immediate occasion was specific. Three of the Anṣār asked some rabbis about a matter in the Torah, and the rabbis refused to tell them. But the same theologian argues the words are general. The lesson follows the wording, not only the occasion. Anyone who holds knowledge others need, and sits on it, stands under this ayah.

This reaches every leader. The manager who knows the targets cannot be met and lets the team keep promising them. The trustee who knows the charity's money was misspent and stays quiet to protect a friend. The teacher who knows the better answer and does not share it with a rival's pupils.

The repair is named in the next ayah: they must repent, put right what they spoiled, and make plain what they hid (2:160). Concealment is undone only by disclosure.
