Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 161 of 286

Al-Baqarah 2:161

“Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - upon them will be the curse of Allāh and of the angels and the people, all together,”

Saheeh International

Essence

The curse falls on those who reject the truth and die still rejecting it; while there is life, the last line is unwritten.

A reflection

The obituary written in advance

News desks keep obituaries of well-known people written years in advance. They are updated from time to time and filed. Editors know the risk. A late change of heart, a final act of courage or a public apology can make the last paragraph rewrite the rest.

This ayah hangs everything on four words: 'and die while they are disbelievers'. A classical theologian draws out the logic. The curse is tied to dying in that state. So whoever turns back before death is not under it. The ayah just before has already opened that door (2:160).

One commentary records a striking conclusion from many of a classical jurist's teachers. It is not permitted, they said, to curse a particular named disbeliever. No one knows how his life will end, and Allah made the curse conditional on that end. The Prophet ﷺ, the same commentary notes, named certain people only because he was told their outcome. We are not.

This is a check on a very modern habit. We write people off quickly. A public figure says something foolish and is finished. A relative leaves the faith and is spoken of as lost. A teenager goes off the rails and the family decides what he will become. The ayah does not allow that verdict while the person still breathes. Their obituary is still in draft.

It is also a check on ourselves. The same logic cuts the other way. No one is safe because of a good beginning. What counts is the state in which we meet Allah. So pray for the one you have written off, and pray for your own last paragraph.
