Al-Baqarah 2:181

“Then whoever alters it [i.e., the bequest] after he has heard it - the sin is only upon those who have altered it. Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.”

Essence

Whoever changes a just will after hearing it carries the sin alone; the dead cannot object, but Allah heard every word.

A reflection

The One who heard the whisper

A care worker is alone in the room when an old man, barely able to speak, tells her what he wants done with his savings. A share for the neighbour who did his shopping for years. A share for the mosque. The rest for his grandchildren. Nobody else hears. When the family arrives, the eldest son says there was never any such wish.

The ayah ends: 'Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing'. The commentators say what each name covers here. He hears what the dying person said, even if no one else remembers it. He knows what the executor does, and what the heart of each party leans towards: justice or injustice.

That is the majesty of this ayah, and it lands on a particular kind of arrogance. The living have enormous power over the words of the dead. The dead cannot correct us, sue us or remind us. It is easy to feel that what we decide afterwards simply becomes the truth.

Allah's two names deflate that power. Every whisper in that room was heard. Every hidden motive in the family meeting is known. A later commentator calls the ending a promise to the one who made the will and a threat to the one who changes it.

Does Allah need to watch over our paperwork? He needs nothing (35:15). His hearing is not for His sake. It is a shelter for the weakest people in any inheritance: the dead, the absent, the neighbour no one thinks of. When no human court will hear them, He already has.
