Al-Baqarah 2:196
“And complete the ḥajj and ʿumrah for Allāh. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity[71] or sacrifice.[72] And when you are secure,[73] then whoever performs ʿumrah [during the ḥajj months][74] followed by ḥajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during ḥajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is severe in penalty.”

Essence
Complete the pilgrimage for Allah alone; His law bends for illness, poverty and blocked roads, and no one's pilgrimage is second class.
A reflection
For Allah, not for the title
A man insists on being introduced as 'Hajji' at every family gathering. He corrects the children if they forget. He went once, eleven years ago.
The ayah opens with two words that decide everything: 'for Allah'. 'Complete the Hajj and the ʿumra for Allah'. A rhetorician explains: perform them whole, with their rites, for His face, without slackness. An early scholar gave a sharper test. Completion, he said, is to leave your home intending nothing but the pilgrimage. Not to travel for trade and then, near Makkah, think: why not do Hajj while I am here?
The pilgrimage strips away what the ego leans on. Everyone wears the same unstitched cloth. The rich and the poor stand on the same plain. It would be strange to come home and stitch the title back on.
The ayah ends with a line that may surprise. Not 'Allah is Merciful', but 'know that Allah is severe in penalty'. The word ʿiqāb comes from the heel. It is what follows at the heel of a deed. The One whose House you visit is not a tour operator. He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, and your deeds walk behind you to Him.
Why remind pilgrims of severity? Not because He needs their journey. He is free of all need (35:15). The reminder protects the worshipper. Sacred rites are easily turned into a show, a status, a holiday with prayers. Remembering His greatness keeps the pilgrim small, and smallness is what the journey was for.
