Al-Baqarah 2:199

“Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Stand where everyone stands and move with everyone; there is no private enclosure before Allah, and after the greatest worship comes the plea for forgiveness.

A reflection

No private enclosure before Allah

A gated development builds a wall between itself and the estate next door. Then its residents petition the council to close the footpath they once shared.

Before Islam, the Quraysh and those who followed their ways were called al-Ḥums. Sahih al-Bukhari records that they would not stand with everyone else at ʿArafa. They stopped short, at Muzdalifa, inside the sacred boundary. A classical commentator gives their reasoning: we are the people of Allah in His town, the dwellers of His House. A rhetorician names the motive plainly: they held themselves above the people and would not stand level with them.

Then the ayah: 'Pour forth from where the people pour forth'. Go out to ʿArafa with everyone. Stand where they stand. Leave when they leave.

This is majesty doing its work on the ego. The One before whom the pilgrims stand is so great that every human rank collapses in His presence. Tribe, lineage and closeness to the House count for nothing at ʿArafa. A king and a porter stand in the same dust and ask the same Lord.

The ayah ends: 'Seek Allah's forgiveness; Allah is Forgiving, Merciful'. Even the proud are invited back.

Does He need the crowd to stand together, or the proud to be humbled? No. He is free of all need (35:15). The equality serves us. A heart that stands level with others before Allah is freed from the exhausting work of ranking everyone it meets.
