Al-Baqarah 2:200

“And when you have completed your rites, remember Allāh like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, "Our Lord, give us in this world," and he will have in the Hereafter no share.”

Essence

Replace boasting about ancestors with remembrance of Allah, constant as a child calling its parents; and beware prayers that ask only for this world.

A reflection

From praising your fathers to praising your Lord

On a terrace, football fans chant for an hour about a cup their club won forty years ago. None of them was born when it happened.

A classical commentator records what the Arabs did when their pilgrimage rites were over. They would stand together in the season and boast. 'My father fed the people. My father carried the blood-money for others'. They had no remembrance, he says, but the deeds of their fathers. Then the ayah came: 'remember Allah as you remember your fathers, or with even greater remembrance'.

The ayah does not mock the instinct. People need something to be proud of, a name to say aloud. It redirects it. The energy once spent on ancestors is turned towards the One who gave the ancestors everything they had. A modern concise commentary adds the reason: every blessing you enjoy comes from Him.

The modern world has many versions of the fathers' boast. Our university, our firm, our country's past victories, our family name. None of it is wrong to mention. All of it is fragile to lean on.

The pilgrims had just stood at ʿArafa, stripped of every rank. The ayah asks them not to put the ranks back on as they leave. Go home talking about Allah more than about your fathers.
