Al-Baqarah 2:210
“Do they await but that Allāh should come to them in covers of clouds and the angels [as well] and the matter is [then] decided? And to Allāh [all] matters are returned.”

Essence
What is left to wait for, but the Day itself: Allah coming in canopies of cloud, the matter settled, everything returned to Him?
A reflection
When the matter is no longer ours to decide
From a mountain hut, a climber watches a wall of cloud roll down the valley. It swallows one village, then the next, then the road she came up. Nothing she can do will slow it.
The ayah paints a far greater scene. 'Are they waiting for anything except that Allah should come to them in canopies of cloud, with the angels?' Then 'the matter is decided'. A classical commentator explains it as the Day of Judgement, when Allah judges between the first and the last. He links it to another ayah: 'your Lord comes, and the angels, rank upon rank' (89:22).
The word ghamām pictures cloud that closes over the light. Its root also gives ghamm, the grief that covers a heart. On that Day the sky itself is veiled, and every heart that put this moment off is covered with dread.
Then three words: wa quḍiya l-amr, 'and the matter is decided'. The root pictures a thing brought to its end, like a debt paid in full. Every argument, every delay, every 'not yet' is closed.
This is majesty that silences the ego. We spend our lives deciding: what to accept, when to change, whom to listen to. The ayah shows a moment when nothing is left for us to decide. 'And to Allah all matters are returned'.
Does He need us to be awed by this? No. He is free of all need (35:15). The scene is shown to us now, while the deciding is still ours.
