Al-Baqarah 2:211

“Ask the Children of Israel how many a sign of evidence We have given them. And whoever exchanges the favor of Allāh [for disbelief] after it has come to him - then indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Count the clear signs given to those before you; whoever trades Allah's gift for ingratitude meets a Lord severe in penalty.

A reflection

Ask how many

An archivist sorts a family's papers after the last of them has died. One drawer holds letters that were never answered. Invitations, apologies, offers of help, all opened, none replied to.

'Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them'. A classical commentator lists some. The staff and the shining hand. The sea split open. Water from the struck rock. Clouds shading them in the fierce heat. Manna and quails from the sky. Each sign was a letter from their Lord, and many went unanswered.

The ayah speaks in the voice of majesty: 'We gave them'. The giving was His. The signs were not earned, bargained for or deserved. They came because He chose to send them.

Then the warning: 'whoever exchanges the favour of Allah after it has come to him, Allah is severe in penalty'. A concise commentary explains that the signs themselves are the favour, because they lead to guidance.

This is not only history. Every human life has its drawer of unanswered letters from Allah. The recovery we did not expect. The person who reminded us of Him at the right moment. The ayah that suddenly made sense. The ego quickly files these away as luck or coincidence.

Does Allah need His signs acknowledged? No. He is free of all need (35:15). But the one who answers them is guided by them. Ask yourself the ayah's question: how many have I been given?
