Al-Baqarah 2:230
“And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him.[90] And if he [i.e., the latter husband] divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon them [i.e., the woman and her former husband] for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allāh. These are the limits of Allāh, which He makes clear to a people who know [i.e.,understand].”

Essence
A third divorce is final, which gives weight to the first two; any later return needs an honest hope of keeping Allah's limits.
A reflection
Why the third time is final
A dressmaker cutting silk for a wedding dress measures three times before she lifts the scissors. Cotton forgives mistakes. Silk at that price does not. Knowing the cut is final makes her hands careful.
After two divorces that can be undone comes a third. If he divorces her a third time, she is not lawful to him until she has married someone else. The door does not simply close; it closes in a way that changes how the first two are handled.
A classical scholar of the heart reflected on this wisdom. When a husband knows that a third divorce puts her beyond his reach, he holds on more firmly. He is more wary of parting. The finality protects the marriage before it ever reaches that point.
The same scholar compared it with what came before. In one earlier law, he wrote, a woman who remarried could never return to her first husband. In another, divorce was barred altogether. This ayah takes a middle course: release is possible, return is possible, but not endlessly and not lightly.
There is a strategic principle here for any serious commitment. Some decisions should be reversible, so that people can learn and repair. Others must be final, so that people take the earlier steps seriously. Wise design knows which is which.
The ayah ends: these are the limits of Allah, which He makes clear for people who know. The wisdom is there. It shows itself to those who look for it, rather than only asking what they are allowed to do.
There is a second consequence, quieter than the first. Finality changes how people speak long before any third divorce. A husband who knows that one more sentence could close the door for good has a reason to leave the room instead. He has a reason to sleep on it, and to let his anger cool. The rule works mostly in conversations that never happen. Its best results are the arguments that ended in silence rather than in a word that could not be taken back.
