Al-Baqarah 2:28

“How can you disbelieve in Allāh when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.”

Essence

You were nothing and He gave you life; He will take it, give it again and bring you back to Him.

A reflection

Where was I?

An eight-year-old is turning the pages of his parents' wedding album. The marquee, the cake, his grandmother dancing, uncles with more hair. He studies every photo, then looks up, puzzled. 'But where was I?' His mother laughs. 'You weren't anywhere. You weren't yet.'

The ayah begins exactly there. 'You were dead, and He gave you life.' The earliest authorities explain 'dead' as not yet existing. You were dust, or nothing at all, and He brought you out. One classical commentator notes why non-existence is called death. Both share the same absence: no feeling, no awareness. The Quran calls dead land and lifeless idols 'dead' in the same sense.

Hold that for a moment before your ego starts talking. Before your name, your job title, your opinions and your followers, there was a long stretch of time in which you were not. The Quran asks elsewhere: 'Has there come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing worth mentioning?' (76:1). The world ran without you. The wedding happened without you. Nobody missed you, because there was no you to miss.

Then, with no request from you, He gave you life. Everything you have been proud of since was built on that first gift. You did not earn it, apply for it or even know it was coming.

A fair question: why would Allah remind us that He gave us life? Is He asking to be thanked, like a benefactor who wants his name on the building? One classical commentator gives a human comparison. The more a father has done for a child, raising, teaching and providing, the uglier that child's contempt. The reminder does not add to Allah. He is free of all need (35:15). It exposes what ingratitude really is, so that we can stop it.

The arrogant person lives as if he were self-made. This ayah shows him the empty page before his story began. The humble person sees the same page and feels relief. You never had to hold yourself up. You were held from the start.
