Ghafir 40:11

“They will say, "Our Lord, You made us lifeless twice and gave us life twice, and we have confessed our sins. So is there to an exit any way?"”

Saheeh International

Essence

Too late, they recite their whole existence in four beats, confess, and ask for any way out at all.

A reflection

A whole existence in four beats

Our Lord, You caused us to die twice, and gave us life twice. In one breath, the people of the Fire summarise everything that has ever happened to them.

What are the two deaths and two lives? The commentaries record several views, and most settle on one. Ibn Masʿūd and Ibn ʿAbbās are reported to have read it alongside another ayah. How can you disbelieve in Allah, when you were dead and He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then give you life again (2:28).

So: first, not yet alive. Then given life in the womb. Then death at the end of one's days. Then life again for the rising. Two deaths, two lives. One commentary calls this reading the correct one, without doubt. Other early scholars proposed different counts, and the debate is recorded, but the main reading is clear.

One commentary answers a grammatical puzzle. How can being created lifeless be called being 'caused to die'? It is like saying: glory to the One who made the gnat small and the elephant large. Nothing was shrunk or stretched. He simply made each that way.

Now look at the four beats from the inside. Only one of them is a stretch in which anything can be chosen. The first death, before birth, was given. The second death, at the end, is coming. The final rising is certain. The span between birth and death is the only part where a person can act.

Scroll back through the photos on a phone, from a baby picture to this morning. That whole run of images is the only editable part of the story.

The people in this ayah can see all four beats at once. That clarity arrives when the one open stretch has closed.
