Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 50 of 286
Al-Baqarah 2:50
“And [recall] when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah split the sea for the Children of Israel, brought them through, and drowned Pharaoh's people before their eyes.
A reflection
While you were watching
A woman reported fraud at the company where she worked. She lost her job, her references and, for a while, most of her friends. Seven years later she is folding laundry when the evening news shows the company's directors leaving court, convicted. She sits down on the edge of the bed and watches the whole report without moving.
The ayah ends with three words that are easy to pass over: wa-antum tanẓurūn, while you were looking. The Children of Israel did not hear about Pharaoh's end from a messenger. They stood on the far shore and watched the sea close over his army. One classical commentator explains why that detail matters. It was to heal their hearts, and to make the humbling of their oppressor complete.
The scale of it humbles anyone. The most powerful army of its age, chariots and horsemen, swallowed by water that moments before had stood like walls. The ayah attributes every step to Allah: We split the sea, We rescued you, We drowned them. Pharaoh had claimed to be a lord. The sea answered to Someone else.
The ego of the powerful always assumes it will not be watched falling. Every tyrant, small or large, plans as if his victims will never see the end of the story. The ayah says otherwise. Sometimes Allah lets the wronged see it with their own eyes.
Why record the drowning at all? Does Allah need His power witnessed? He is free of all need (35:15). The witness is for the weak, to know that they were not forgotten. It is also for the strong, while there is still time to turn back.
Not everyone who is wronged sees the ending in this life. The Children of Israel did. The ayah lets every oppressed person borrow their view from the shore.
