Ash-Shu'ara 26:61
فَلَمَّا تَرَٰٓءَا ٱلْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَـٰبُ مُوسَىٰٓ إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ
“And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"”
Saheeh International
Essence
The two hosts come into sight of each other, and fear speaks first, in the grammar of certainty: we are overtaken.
A reflection
Overtaken: the word that changed sides
Mudrakūn, overtaken, caught up with, occurs in exactly this form only once in the Qur'an. The corpus data confirms it. Its root has a homely first picture. Darak is the extra length of rope knotted onto the well-rope, so the bucket can reach the water at the bottom. Idrāk is one thing catching up with another and arriving at it.
So the cry at the shore meant: the rope has reached us. Whatever is chasing has arrived.
Now follow the same root through the story. Earlier, Allah had told Musa to strike a dry road through the sea, 'not fearing to be overtaken', lā takhāfu darakan (20:77). The very word they cried out had already been answered, before the journey began.
Then follow it to the end. Another surah describes Pharaoh's last moments in the water: until, when drowning overtook him, adrakahu al-gharaq, he said: I believe (10:90). The word the Israelites feared did arrive that morning. It arrived for the pursuer.
Fear had named the right danger and the wrong victim. Someone was going to be overtaken at the sea. It was not them.
This pattern is worth learning to notice. Fear is often accurate about the shape of a danger and mistaken about where it will land. The worker sure she will be blamed for the failed project watches the blame fall on the manager who hid the faults. The family sure a dispute will ruin them watches it ruin the one who started it.
This is not a promise that every fear lands elsewhere. It is a reminder that our verdicts are guesses. The word 'overtaken' was spoken by the frightened, but it was not theirs to assign. Allah decides who the rope reaches.
