Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 55 of 286
Al-Baqarah 2:55
“And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allāh outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.”

Essence
They set terms for faith, 'not until we see Allah openly', and a single blast from the sky showed how little a creature can bear.
A reflection
Terms and conditions for God
At a school's eclipse event, the teachers hand out card viewers and warn every child never to look straight at the sun. One boy decides the warning is exaggerated. He stares for a few seconds, and for a week he sees dark spots wherever he looks. The sun did not punish him. He simply met something too strong for his eyes.
The people in this ayah said to Mūsā: 'We will never believe you until we see Allah jahratan'. The root of jahratan pictures a well choked with mud, dug out until the clear water shows. They wanted Allah laid bare, with nothing between. And they framed it as terms: until then, no belief.
The answer was a ṣāʿiqa, a blast from the sky that felled them 'as you looked on'. Elsewhere the Quran shows what happens when even a mountain meets a glimpse of His glory. When Mūsā asked to see his Lord, the mountain crumbled to dust and Mūsā fell senseless (7:143). If a mountain cannot hold its shape, what did these men imagine their eyes would do?
That is the ego's oldest mistake: to treat the Creator as a candidate who must pass our interview. Prove Yourself on my terms, in my time, to my senses, or I will not believe. The pride in it is hard to see from inside. We would never speak to a king like that, still less to the sun. Yet people speak to the Lord of the sun that way.
The ayah does not humiliate the wish to know Allah. It humbles the posture. Faith begins when a creature stops dictating terms and starts to understand its size. The One who made the sun is not smaller than it.
