Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 57 of 286
Al-Baqarah 2:57
“And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves.”

Essence
In a wilderness they had earned, Allah shaded them and fed them each morning; their ingratitude could not touch Him, only them.
A reflection
Shouting at the sea
A man stands on a shingle beach in a winter gale, furious about something, and shouts at the waves. He shouts until his voice is gone. The sea does not notice. The tide comes in at exactly the time it was always going to come in. The only thing damaged by the afternoon is his throat.
The ayah ends with a sentence that punctures a quiet arrogance: 'They did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves'. One concise commentary explains: they did not diminish Us in anything by denying these gifts. The root of the verb can mean to diminish, as a garden that 'held nothing back' of its fruit (18:33). Nothing was taken from Allah by their ingratitude. Everything was taken from them.
The Prophet ﷺ conveyed Allah's words: 'My servants, you will never reach the point of harming Me, so that you could harm Me. Nor will you ever reach the point of benefiting Me, so that you could benefit Me' (Sahih Muslim). If every human who ever lived had the most God-conscious heart, it would add nothing to His kingdom. If all had the most wicked, it would subtract nothing.
The ego finds this hard. Part of us likes to imagine that our rebellion costs God something, that our disobedience is a kind of power. The same part imagines our worship is a favour to Him. Both illusions collapse here.
That can sound cold until you see what it means. A God who could be harmed by us would need to protect Himself from us. A God who cannot be harmed has only one reason left for His commands: our own good. The shade, the manna and the quails were not payments to keep a people on side. They were care, from One who needs nothing.
