Al-Baqarah 2:66

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا نَكَـٰلًا لِّمَا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهَا وَمَا خَلْفَهَا وَمَوْعِظَةً لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

“And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allāh.”

Essence

The Sabbath village became a fetter on the feet of everyone after it, and a reminder that softens the hearts of the God-conscious.

A reflection

A fetter for those who come after

In the waiting area of a hospital's emergency department hangs a glass case. Inside is a cracked motorcycle helmet, and a small card giving the rider's age: nineteen. Nobody explains it. Every young person who waits there reads the card, and some of them ride home more slowly.

'We made it a nakāl.' The commentaries trace the word to a fetter. A nikl is a shackle on the foot; a heavy bridle was called by the same word, because it holds an animal back. Nakala is to shrink back from something. So a nakāl is a punishment that holds back whoever sees it. One commentary defines it as a lesson that restrains anyone who reflects on it.

This changes how the Sabbath story should be read. Its purpose was not only to punish a village. It was to put a fetter on the feet of everyone tempted to try the same trick, then and afterwards. The village itself became the glass case.

The Quran is full of such cases: towns destroyed, empires gone, people undone by their own cleverness. A reader can treat them as ancient history, or let them do what they were made for. Their job is to hold us back before we reach the place where the punishment was needed.

There is mercy in this. A warning that stops you is a gift that costs you nothing. The people of the village paid for the lesson. Those who come after can have it for the price of attention.
