Al-Baqarah 2:9

يُخَـٰدِعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلَّآ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ

“They [think to] deceive Allāh and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.”

Saheeh International

Essence

They try to outwit Allah and the believers, but the only one their trick ever lands on is themselves, and they cannot even feel it.

A reflection

The only person in the car

A young man pays a friend to sit his driving theory test for him. It works. He passes, gets his licence, and tells himself nobody was hurt. Two years later, on a wet motorway at night, a sign flashes a warning he has never learned to read. There is no examiner in the car now. The only person he fooled is the one holding the wheel.

The ayah says it plainly: wa-mā yakhdaʿūna illā anfusahum, they deceive none but themselves. An early commentator explains how. The deceiver seems to be giving his own soul what it wants. He pours it a cup of pleasure and relief. In reality he is leading it to the waters of its ruin. All the while he believes he is doing himself a favour.

The concise commentaries give the mechanism. The consequences of their deception come back on them. In this world, the Prophet ﷺ was shown what they concealed, so they were exposed. And in the next, they face the reckoning. The trick never landed where it was aimed.

Then comes the most unsettling phrase: wa-mā yashʿurūn, and they do not perceive it. A concise commentary glosses it simply: they do not know that their deception is aimed at themselves. They have lost even the noticing. Self-deception, once it has worked long enough, stops feeling like deception. It feels like normal life.

This is worth taking personally. Most of us are not hypocrites in the full sense. But we all know the small version. We tell ourselves a habit is harmless, an excuse is a reason, a delay is wisdom. We fool other people a little. We fool ourselves far more.

The cure the ayah implies is the one thing the self-deceiver avoids: honest perception. Ask a trusted friend what they see. Sit alone with Allah and name the thing plainly. Before the motorway, not after.
