Al-Baqarah 2:92

“And Moses had certainly brought you clear proofs. Then you took the calf [in worship] after that, while you were wrongdoers.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Mūsā brought clear proofs, and still, once he was gone, they took the calf: the old story told again, now as an argument.

A reflection

'Show me one miracle'

On a bridge over a city river, a street magician seems to float a foot above the pavement. A crowd gathers, phones raised. People gasp, film, and swear they will never forget it. Ten minutes later most of them are queuing for coffee, talking about something else.

Many people say, quite sincerely, that one clear miracle would settle everything. If God split the sky tonight, they would believe tomorrow. This ayah quietly tests that claim. 'Mūsā came to you with clear proofs.'

The commentaries list what those proofs were. The staff that became a serpent, the hand that shone white, the sea opened into a dry road. They add the gifts of the desert: shade from the clouds, manna and quails, water from the rock. One commentary explains the name bayyināt. They made it plain to anyone watching that no human being could have done them.

And then: 'you took the calf'. A people who had crossed the sea on dry ground bowed to a statue they had made.

A classical commentator draws a sharp conclusion. If those so close to the wonders could do that, those far from them in time are quicker still to deny. Spectacle does not hold a heart. Its effect settles with the dust it raised.

So what is given to people who come later? The Prophet ﷺ answered directly. Every prophet, he said, was given signs that moved people to believe. 'What I was given is revelation that Allah revealed to me'. So he hoped to have the most followers on the Day of Resurrection (Sahih al-Bukhari).

That is a remarkable choice. The final sign is not a moment that must be witnessed and then fades. It is a Book that can be opened tonight, by anyone, and examined line by line. The sea closed again behind them. The Quran is still open.

What remains open is the heart's part, and no sign can do that for us. The magician on the bridge was forgotten by lunchtime. The sign in your hands asks for something slower: to be read, and read again, until it stays.
