Taha 20:115

وَلَقَدْ عَهِدْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ ءَادَمَ مِن قَبْلُ فَنَسِىَ وَلَمْ نَجِدْ لَهُۥ عَزْمًا

“And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.[863]”

Saheeh International

Essence

The first human let his one clear charge slip, like a tent-peg left at an old campsite: not for lack of wisdom, but of resolve.

A reflection

Look to your forgotten things

Two words in this ayah share a desert setting, and the lexicons let us see it.

ʿAhidnā, We made a covenant, comes from a root that means keeping hold of a thing and returning to it. A campsite was called ʿahd when a tribe kept coming back to it, season after season. The later rains that returned to land already watered were ʿihād, tending it. A covenant, in this picture, is a place you keep going back to.

Fa-nasiya, but he forgot, comes from a root with its own camp scene. When a desert camp broke up and moved on, someone would call out: look to your ansāʾ. These were the small, cheap things easily left behind. A stick, a cup, a wooden tent-pin. Each was a nisy, a thing dropped on the ground and forgotten.

Put the two together and the ayah draws a picture. Adam was given a place to keep returning to: one charge, one tree to leave alone. And he moved on without it, the way a tent-pin is left in the sand.

Think of a family leaving a holiday cottage after a week by the sea. Bags in the boot, children buckled in. The father does a last walk through the empty rooms: under the beds, behind the bathroom door, the charger still in the socket. Every family has lost something this way. Not because it did not matter, but because nobody went back for it.

One commentary says the root of Adam's forgetting was exactly that. He did not give the charge real attention. He did not fasten it with the knot of the heart. Forgetting was born of not returning.

So the question this ayah leaves is not 'how good is your memory?'. It is 'which covenant have you stopped walking back to?' The prayer you meant to keep. The promise you made at a graveside. Look to your forgotten things before the camp moves on.
