Taha 20:41
وَٱصْطَنَعْتُكَ لِنَفْسِى
“And I produced you for Myself.[837]”
Saheeh International
Essence
Three words close the story of his rescue, I have fashioned you for Myself, and a life learns whose it is.
A reflection
Not your own project
A woman in her thirties has built her life as a brand. Her work, her home, her holidays, her body, all of it curated, photographed and presented. Ask her whose life it is and she would laugh at the question. Mine, obviously. Every choice is about who she wants to become.
This ayah answers that question in three words, and the answer reverses everything. Wa-ṣṭanaʿtuka li-nafsī: and I have fashioned you for Myself.
Notice what has just happened in the passage. Allah has recounted Musa's whole life: the river, the palace, the sister, the killing, the trials, Madyan. Then He gives the reason for all of it. It was not a random series of escapes. It was a making. And the making was for Him.
One commentator draws out the practical meaning. For Myself, he paraphrases: so that I may direct you in My commands. So that you are not taken up with anything other than what I have commanded. So that your movements and your stillness are for Me, not for yourself, and not for anyone else.
That is a hard sentence for the ego to hear. The ego's deepest belief is self-ownership: my time, my body, my career, my story. This ayah gently says otherwise. The story was never yours. It was being written by someone else, for a purpose bigger than you.
And yet it does not crush. It is the most dignifying thing that could be said to a human being. To be made, deliberately, by the Lord of the worlds, for His own purposes, is to matter more than any brand could make you matter.
What would change if you believed that about your own life? Not as a slogan, but as a fact. Who are you being made for?
