Taha 20:59

قَالَ مَوْعِدُكُمْ يَوْمُ ٱلزِّينَةِ وَأَن يُحْشَرَ ٱلنَّاسُ ضُحًى

“[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."[840]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Musa chose the most public moment Egypt had, the festival day in full morning light, because only the side with the truth wants everyone watching.

A reflection

Only the truth asks for daylight

A young engineer is about to show her new product at a large industry event. Her advisers urge a polished, pre-recorded video. Nothing can go wrong with a video. She refuses. She will demonstrate it live, on stage, in front of everyone. If it works, nobody will ever doubt it again.

Musa's choice has the same logic, taken to its limit. Pharaoh asked him to name the appointment. Musa named the festival day, when people dressed up and gathered from every quarter. Then he named the hour: ḍuḥan, the forenoon, when the sun has climbed high.

One commentator gives three reasons for reading these as Musa's own words, and the second is the sharpest. Naming the festival meant everyone would see what happened. That choice suits only the one in the right, who knows the upper hand is his. It does not suit the falsifier, whose only tool is confusion.

Another commentator explains the hour. Forenoon was chosen so that everything would be as clear, plain and visible as possible. That, he says, is how the affairs of prophets always are. Everything is open, with nothing hidden and nothing smuggled. That is why Musa did not say "at night", but in the day, at forenoon.

A sceptic might call this reckless. Why stake everything on one public test? But Musa was not gambling. Allah had already told him and Harun, earlier in this surah, that He was with them, hearing and seeing (20:46). His confidence was not in his own skill. It was in the One who had sent him.

There is a simple test in this for anything you believe or do. Would you be happy for it to be seen at forenoon, by everyone? Deception needs shade. Truth asks for a crowd and the highest sun.
