Taha 20:46

قَالَ لَا تَخَافَآ ۖ إِنَّنِى مَعَكُمَآ أَسْمَعُ وَأَرَىٰ

“[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Two frightened men are given not an army but a presence: do not fear, I am with you both, I hear and I see.

A reflection

The man whose breath was not his own

A junior analyst's stomach drops every time an email arrives from the chief executive. He rereads it three times. He imagines tone where there is none. In his mind, that one man holds his whole future. His power feels limitless.

Musa and Harun felt something like that about Pharaoh, and with far better reason. Allah's answer did not argue with their fear. It rearranged it. Lā takhāfā innanī maʿakumā asmaʿu wa-arā: do not fear; I am with you both; I hear and I see.

One commentator spells out what that meant for Pharaoh's power. Know, he paraphrases, that his forelock is in My hand. He does not speak, or breathe, or strike, except by My permission and after My command. And I am with you both with My protection, My help and My support.

Picture the most frightening person in your life, then read that again. They cannot finish a sentence or draw a breath without permission they did not grant themselves. Their power is borrowed, moment by moment, from the One who is with you.

That is how majesty humbles the ego, in two directions. It shrinks the ego of the powerful, who forget whose breath they are breathing. And it shrinks the inflated picture we carry of others' power. That is a quieter form of the same error: giving a creature a size that belongs to the Creator.

Does Allah need to remind His prophets that He hears and sees? He gains nothing from it; He is free of need (35:15). The reminder is for them. And for the analyst rereading the email. The chief executive is also a man who breathes by permission. The One who is with you hears every word he writes, and sees every move he makes.
