Al-Anbya 21:69

قُلْنَا يَـٰنَارُ كُونِى بَرْدًا وَسَلَـٰمًا عَلَىٰٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

“We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham."”

Saheeh International

Essence

A month of firewood, a city watching, a catapult: and three words from Allah turned the blaze into coolness and peace.

A reflection

A month of firewood, undone in one sentence

The commentaries preserve reports of how big that fire was. Wood gathered for weeks. A pit or an enclosure built to hold it. Flames so fierce, one report says, that birds flying over it were scorched. The people could not get close enough to throw him in, so they built a catapult. It was the largest thing that city had ever made, and the whole city came to watch.

Against all of that, the ayah sets two words of Arabic and a name. Qulnā: We said. Yā nāru kūnī bardan wa salāman: O fire, be coolness and peace. That is the whole rescue. No army, no rain, no flood. One commentator describes the fire as a captive, obedient to His power, like a servant given an order who carries it out at once.

Picture a city's New Year fireworks. Months of planning, tonnes of explosives on barges along the river, crowds packed on the bridges since dusk. At twenty to midnight the wind rises. A safety officer speaks one sentence into a radio, and the whole display is cancelled. Everything people spent months building is undone by a sentence. And that sentence was only a man responding to a wind he did not make.

This is where the ego meets its true size. Our grandest projects, our best-defended plans, the fires we light to impress or frighten: all of them answer to One voice. The pride of the people who built that fire is exactly the pride we feel over our own achievements. They were not foolish to be impressed by their fire. They were foolish to think it was theirs.

Someone may ask whether "We said" sounds boastful, or whether Allah needs the praise this display earns. The plural here is the plural of majesty, the way a king speaks. And He needs nothing; the fire obeyed whether anyone praised Him or not. Pride is a lie in a creature, because nothing we have is our own. In Allah it is simply the truth. Knowing that is what lets us put our own pride down and rest.
