“"Peace upon Abraham."”

Essence
Three words close the story: peace be upon Ibrahim, a greeting from Allah to the man who had been offered nothing but fire.
A reflection
No weapon, no war between us
Before salām was a religious greeting, it was a guarantee shouted across the dark. The lexicons record that before Islam, a traveller reaching an unfamiliar camp at dusk would call out salām ʿalaykum. It meant: I come in peace; there is no war between us; you are safe from me. Most of the root is soundness, being safe from harm and defect. This is an established image.
Now hear the ayah with that picture. Salāmun ʿalā Ibrāhīm. Allah Himself calls this greeting over Ibrahim.
Think of everything Ibrahim had been given by people. His father threatened to stone him (19:46). His people built a fire for him (37:97). He left his homeland as a stranger. Almost no one in his own world had said to him: you are safe from us.
And now the Lord of the worlds says it. One early commentator explains the greeting as a security from Allah: that Ibrahim would be mentioned on earth only with good. Another reads it as part of what was 'left' for him in the previous ayah: later generations would say, 'Peace be upon Ibrahim.'
There is a quiet reversal here. The man whom people treated as a threat is the man Allah declares safe and sound. Their verdict was fire. His verdict is peace.
For anyone who has been treated as a danger for doing right, this is worth holding on to. The last word on you does not belong to those who opposed you. It belongs to the One who can say salām and make it true.
When you next say ʿalayhi al-salām after Ibrahim's name, remember the traveller at the edge of the camp. You are joining Allah in telling him: there is no war here.
