Al-Hajj · Madani · ayah 38 of 78
Al-Hajj 22:38
“Indeed, Allāh defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allāh does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.”
Saheeh International
Essence
Allah keeps pushing harm away from those who believe, again and again, so they never need to win by betrayal.
A reflection
The attempts you never heard about
The verb is unusual. Allah could have said yadfaʿu, He pushes away. Instead He says yudāfiʿu, a form normally used for two sides contending. One reading does recite yadfaʿu. But the commentators explain the common form in two ways. It can show intensity: He pushes as hard as one who is fighting for something. Or it can show repetition: He pushes away, then again, then again, each time a new harm is aimed.
And the ayah never names what is pushed away. One classical commentator says the object is left open so that it feels vaster: every harm, unnamed. Another thinks the context limits it to the enemies of that time. Either way, the sentence stops at the person defended, not the danger.
A woman checks her bank app ten times a day. She knows exactly where every pound sits. She has no idea that the fraud team blocked three attempts on her account that month. Her vigilance is real, but it is not what kept her safe.
That is where the ego shrinks. We credit our own caution for the life we have. We remember the locks we fitted and the risks we dodged. We never see the pushes that happened in rooms we were not in. The ayah opens a window onto that unseen work, and it is not ours.
Why announce it at all? Not because Allah needs our thanks. One commentator says the sentence was sent to settle the hearts of believers who were being harassed and kept from the Sanctuary. It is reassurance, not self-praise. He gains nothing from our knowing. We gain the ability to sleep.
Tonight, before you sleep, name one harm you know you escaped. Then sit for a moment with all the ones you never knew about.
