Al-Hajj · Madani · ayah 67 of 78

Al-Hajj 22:67

“For every [religious] community We have appointed rites which they perform. So, [O Muḥammad], let them [i.e., the disbelievers] not contend with you over the matter but invite [them] to your Lord. Indeed, you are upon straight guidance.”

Essence

Allah appointed every community's rites, so do not be drawn into quarrels over yours; keep inviting to your Lord, for you are rightly guided.

A reflection

Who gets to set the rites

A man in his thirties stops praying the five daily prayers. He has not given up on God, he says. He has built something that suits him better. Each morning he lights a candle, sits by the window and writes three things he is thankful for. He calls it his prayer. It is calm and sincere, and he designed every part of it.

Read the first words of this ayah slowly: li-kulli ummatin jaʿalnā mansakan. For every community, We appointed a rite. The verb belongs to Allah, and so does the choosing. One classical commentator notes that 'for every community' is placed first to restrict it. Each rite was fixed for a particular community. It was not picked by that community.

That is an uncomfortable sentence for the modern ego. We customise our playlists, our coffee and our news. It feels natural to customise worship as well. Yet a rite we design ourselves has one quiet flaw. It can never ask us for anything we did not already want to give.

The rites Allah appoints do ask. They wake you when you would rather sleep. They place your forehead on the floor, the part of you that pride holds highest. They send you to a crowded plain in the heat. None of it is shaped around your preferences, and that is the point. Worship you wrote yourself bows to you. Worship He appointed teaches you to bow.

Does Allah need these rites, then? He does not. Three ayat earlier the surah said it plainly: indeed Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy (22:64). A ruler who demands ceremonies for his own glory is a small ruler. The One who needs nothing appoints rites because the worshipper needs them.

The man by the window is not wrong to be thankful. He has only kept the authorship for himself. The ayah gently takes it back. Humility begins when you let Someone else set the shape of your devotion.
