Al-Mu'minun · Makki · ayah 101 of 118

Al-Mu'minun 23:101

فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَلَآ أَنسَابَ بَيْنَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَلَا يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

“So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another.”

Saheeh International

Essence

When the Horn sounds, the family name that opened every door stops working, and no one has breath left to ask who anyone is.

A reflection

The pedigree that does not run the race

At a bloodstock sale, one yearling's catalogue page runs four generations deep. Every name on it won something. The bidding is fierce. The next spring, on the gallops, a plain-bred filly with a half-empty page beats it by six lengths, morning after morning. The page was true. It just did not run.

The lexicons give nasab, lineage, a picture the first hearers knew from the ground at their feet. The root means one thing joined to another. Its naysab is a line of ants on a path, each following the one in front without a break. That is a family tree: link after link, father to son. It is real, and it is beautiful. The lexicons even keep a proverb that cuts it down to size. The near one, it says, is whoever draws near, not whoever claims kinship.

In Makkah lineage was the currency of a man's worth. People asked which tribe you were from before they asked what you had done. The classical explanations of this ayah say that is exactly what stops. No one boasts of lineage on that Day, and no one asks after it.

The Prophet ﷺ put the same truth in one sentence, preserved in Sahih Muslim. Whoever is slowed down by his deeds will not be sped up by his lineage. And when the command came to warn his nearest kin, he called them by name, his own daughter among them. Sahih al-Bukhari records what he said to her, in effect. Ask me for whatever you like of my wealth; I cannot avail you anything against Allah.

If his own daughter's name could not carry her, no surname will carry you. The family you come from is a gift and a trust. It is not a ticket. The question this ayah leaves on the table is a quieter one. If your name were taken away tomorrow, what would be left on your page?
