Al-Ma'arij · Makki · ayah 10 of 44

Al-Ma'arij 70:10

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا

“And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Even the warmest, closest friend will not think to ask after the other, each one entirely swallowed by their own reckoning.

A reflection

A word built from warmth, not just closeness

The word used for friend here comes from a root whose core meaning is heat, warmth, the sense of standing close enough to another person to actually feel them. It is a stronger, more physical word than a general term for acquaintance; it names the specific few people whose presence actually warms a life, not the long list of names in a contacts book.

That is precisely the relationship this ayah chooses to describe failing. Not a stranger ignoring a stranger, which would hardly need stating, but the warmest tie a person has, tested on the one day that actually matters, and found to give out completely. The best friend someone has leaned on through every ordinary crisis for thirty years does not even think to ask, on this particular day, how the other is doing.

This is not presented as cruelty or betrayal. It is presented as total, overwhelming preoccupation: each person is so entirely consumed by their own reckoning that the warmth which has always flowed automatically between them simply has nothing left to draw on. A phone that has never once failed to charge overnight is still, eventually, just a battery, and every human warmth, however reliable it has always seemed, draws from a reserve this Day finally empties completely.
