Al-Mu'minun · Makki · ayah 17 of 118

Al-Mu'minun 23:17

وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعَ طَرَآئِقَ وَمَا كُنَّا عَنِ ٱلْخَلْقِ غَـٰفِلِينَ

“And We have created above you seven layered heavens, and never have We been of [Our] creation unaware.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Above every human head Allah built seven layered heavens, and He has never once looked away from the creatures living beneath them.

A reflection

Asleep under an awning in the rain

Having described the making of a human being from clay to resurrection, the surah lifts the reader's eyes. Wa-laqad khalaqnā fawqakum sabʿa ṭarāʾiq: and indeed We created above you seven layers. The word fawqakum, above you, is personal. Whatever else the heavens are, they are over your head, every moment of your life.

The second half of the ayah explains what that means for the creatures underneath: wa-mā kunnā ʿani al-khalqi ghāfilīn, and We were never unaware of the creation. Several commentators explain it plainly. We were not neglectful of those beneath the heavens. We keep them from falling on them and destroying them. Another commentary links it to the ayah: He holds back the sky from falling on the earth except by His permission (22:65).

Picture a toddler asleep in a pram outside a café during a summer downpour. Her mother has wheeled her under the awning. Rain hammers on the canvas and runs off the edges in sheets. The child sleeps on, arms flung back, utterly unaware of what is keeping her dry or who placed her there.

That is every human being under the sky. We go about our days beneath an immense structure we did not build, could not hold up for a second and rarely think about. We feel independent, capable and in control. The ayah gently corrects the posture. The ceiling over your life is held in place by Another, and so is the life underneath it.

There is no humiliation in that. The child under the awning is not diminished by being protected. She is loved. The right response is not wounded pride but gratitude, and a quieter sense of one's own size.
