Ghafir 40:57

“The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The One who made the heavens and earth can surely remake people, the lesser work; most simply never draw the conclusion.

A reflection

Look up, then measure yourself

La-khalqu al-samāwāti wal-arḍi akbaru min khalqi al-nās. The creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of people.

The sentence opens with an emphatic la: truly, surely. Then it sets two things side by side. One is the sky above and the earth below. The other is us.

A later commentary does not soften the comparison. People, it says, are like nothing beside those vast bodies. The One who made such things is all the more able to make what barely counts beside them, at the beginning and again.

That is humbling, and it is meant to be. The arguers in the previous ayah had chests full of pride. Here, without a word of rebuke, the Quran simply asks them to look up. Your arguments, your rank, your sense of importance: set them under the sky and see what size they are.

One classical commentary, cited in a later one, draws the lesson directly. Allah's creations are greater and more majestic than human beings. So why should any one of them argue and be arrogant against his Creator? The later commentary thought this reading added little. But the instinct is sound. Pride is hard to keep under an open sky.

A pilot on a night flight over the ocean dims the cockpit lights for a few minutes. The stars come out in thousands. The aircraft, with three hundred people asleep behind him, suddenly feels very small. He turns the lights back up quieter than he was.

A doubt can follow. If we are so small, does Allah boast of His size, or care about us at all? The ayah answers both. Its purpose is not display. It is an argument for our resurrection. The vast sky is mentioned because He intends to raise us again. Our smallness is not neglect. It is the measure of how easy our return is for Him.
