Ash-Shu'ara 26:115

إِنْ أَنَا۠ إِلَّا نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

“I am only a clear warner."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Asked to drive away his poorest followers, Nuh defines his whole task in five words: to warn, and to make the warning plain.

A reflection

A job description that shields the weakest

A woman becomes chair of a village allotment society. In her first week, three long-standing members take her aside. The newcomers on the lower plots, they say, are not really allotment people. Clear them out and we will renew our subscriptions. She thinks for a moment, then answers. 'My job is to run the plots by the rules. It is not to choose members by who their parents were.'

This ayah is Nuh's version of that answer. His people had just said they could not believe while 'the lowest' followed him (26:111). One reading in the commentaries is that they wanted those followers sent away first. Nuh refused: 'I will not drive away the believers' (26:114). Then he gave his reason in five words. I am nothing but a clear warner.

The Arabic builds this as a restriction: in … illā, 'not … except'. One commentator draws out its force. My task is confined to warning. It does not stretch to pleasing some of you by expelling others. A neat job description became a shield for the most vulnerable people in the room.

Leaders are constantly offered a quiet trade. Give the important people what they want, and they will come on board. Narrow the doors a little, and the influential will walk through them. The offer sounds strategic. Nuh saw that accepting it would change what he was. A warner who sorts his audience by status has become a doorman.

The principle travels well. A head teacher is asked to steer a difficult pupil elsewhere before inspection. A mosque committee is urged to keep certain families off the stage. Each time, the clearest defence is a clear sense of the job. When you know exactly what you are for, you also know what you are not for.
