Sad 38:70

إِن يُوحَىٰٓ إِلَىَّ إِلَّآ أَنَّمَآ أَنَا۠ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ

“It has not been revealed to me except that I am a clear warner."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Even holding heaven's own conversation, he claims nothing for himself: it was revealed, and it was revealed for one purpose, to warn.

A reflection

The story of Adam arrives labelled as a warning

A man of forty still carries the story of Adam as he first met it, at six, in a weekend-school play. Two boys wore tinfoil wings and knelt on the carpet. A third, in a black cape, folded his arms and would not kneel. Everyone laughed, and someone's mother filmed it.

Many of us keep the story there: a tale about the beginning of things, told to children, finished long ago. This ayah labels it before it is told. Illā annamā anā nadhīrun mubīn: nothing is revealed to me except that I am a clear warner. One reading of the grammar sharpens it further: nothing is revealed to me except for warning.

So the account that follows comes with its purpose stamped on it. One classical commentator says it outright. Allah revealed this story so that it would carry its hearers towards sincere obedience. It would also guard them against ignorance, blind imitation and arrogance. Another commentary notices how this telling is arranged. The angels' question about the vicegerent is folded away, and the weight falls on Iblīs. That suited the people of Makkah, who were refusing a messenger out of status. One creature refused one command, and look where it led. What, then, of people refusing many?

That changes how to read the next fifteen ayat. They are not an origin myth to be admired from a distance. They are a mirror held up to a listener in the middle of his own refusal. The proud one in the story is not a costume in a school play. He is a possibility in every heart that hears it.

None of this makes the story less wonderful for children. But a child grows, and the story is meant to grow with him. Read the account again, slowly, as an adult being warned. Then ask which figure you have been acting like this week: the ones who went down, or the one who folded his arms.
