Ash-Shu'ara 26:116
قَالُوا۟ لَئِن لَّمْ تَنتَهِ يَـٰنُوحُ لَتَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلْمَرْجُومِينَ
“They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Out of answers after Nuh's long call, his people reached for the oldest argument of all: stop, or we will stone you.
A reflection
A threat is a confession
A junior auditor finds that two sets of figures do not match. She writes it up carefully and sends it to the finance director. His reply comes within the hour. It contains no corrected numbers, no explanation and no counter-calculation. It says only: 'Think carefully about your career.' She reads it twice. Then she realises it has told her everything. If he had an answer, he would have sent it.
Nuh's people had been given every chance to answer him. He had called them their brother, shown them he wanted no payment, and answered their contempt for his followers. One concise modern commentary describes what happened next in a phrase. They turned away from dialogue to threats. Another notes the order: once Nuh had completed his answer, nothing was left to them but intimidation.
That sequence is worth remembering whenever someone threatens you over a matter of truth. A threat is not a stronger argument. It is what people produce when the argument has run out. The heavier the threat, the emptier the case behind it often is.
This cuts both ways. It steadies the person being threatened: the pressure is a sign that your point landed. And it warns the person tempted to threaten. When we reach for 'or else' with a spouse, a child or an employee, it is worth pausing. Have I actually answered what they said? Or am I using power because I have no reply?
Nuh's people won nothing by their threat except a place in the Quran as the people who could not answer. The auditor kept the email. Truth can wait a long time for its hearing.
