Ash-Shu'ara 26:154

مَآ أَنتَ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُنَا فَأْتِ بِـَٔايَةٍ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

“You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Thamud tell Salih he is only a human like them and dare him to produce a sign; they will get exactly what they ask for.

A reflection

They were right about the premise

An apprentice electrician, nineteen, is rewiring a socket in an old farmhouse. He opens the board and goes pale. The wiring is cloth-covered and scorched in two places. He tells the owner it is dangerous. The owner laughs. "You're a lad from the next village. I knew your grandad." All of that is true. None of it changes what is behind the board.

Thamud's sentence has the same structure. Mā anta illā basharun mithlunā: you are nothing but a human like us. One concise commentary fills in what they meant: you have no advantage over us that would make you a messenger. Another adds: so how can you be singled out?

Here is the surprising thing. The messengers agreed with the first half. Another surah records their answer to exactly this charge. We are only humans like you, they said, but Allah confers His favour on whomever He wills of His servants (14:11).

That reply is a lesson in honest argument. The messengers did not deny a true premise to win a point. They granted it fully. Then they showed that the conclusion did not follow. Being human does not stop a person carrying a message. It only means the message is not his own.

The sceptic's question deserves the same treatment today. Why should one ordinary human have any authority from God over others like him? The answer is that he has none of his own. The authority belongs to the One who sent him, and the proof is the sign that comes with him.

The farmhouse owner was right about the boy's age and village. He was wrong about the wiring. A true premise can still carry a man to a dangerous conclusion.
