Ash-Shu'ara 26:155

قَالَ هَـٰذِهِۦ نَاقَةٌ لَّهَا شِرْبٌ وَلَكُمْ شِرْبُ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ

“He said, "This is a she-camel.[1056] For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Asked for a sign, Salih points to a living she-camel and sets terms: her turn at the water, then theirs, on known days.

A reflection

A sign you have to live beside

A sceptic might find this sign strangely ordinary. Thamud asked for proof that Salih was sent by Allah. The answer was an animal that gets thirsty. Surely a true sign would be grander, something that settles the matter in one blinding moment.

But look at what the sign was built to do. The commentaries report that she came in answer to their own demand, and that Salih first took their pledge to believe if it came. Then the first thing said about her is not her size or her beauty. It is that she drinks. Lahā shirbun: she has a turn at the water.

A spectacle is seen once and then remembered. This sign moved into the town. Every second day the well was hers, and every second day the people had to step back. The proof did not stand on a hill to be admired. It walked their streets and asked something of them, again and again.

A man's closest friend is dying. In his last week he gives him a young olive tree in a pot. 'Water it every other day,' he says. 'Not every day. It will drown.' For the first month the man waters it on time, with a lump in his throat. By the third month it is a chore. By the sixth he notices it only when the leaves curl. The gift has not changed. It was always going to ask the same small thing, on the same schedule, long after the grief had faded.

That is what Thamud were given. Not a miracle to watch, but a miracle to keep faith with. The question was never whether they could see the sign. It was whether they could live beside it without resenting what it asked.
