Al-An'am 6:14

“Say, "Is it other than Allāh I should take as a protector, Creator of the heavens and earth, while it is He who feeds and is not fed?" Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, I have been commanded to be the first [among you] who submit [to Allāh] and [was commanded], 'Do not ever be of the polytheists.'"”

Essence

Only the One who split the heavens into being, and who feeds everyone while needing no one, is worth taking as your protector.

A reflection

The one who always picks up the bill

Every family has one. At birthdays, Eid dinners and long Sunday lunches, he is the one who reaches for the bill. He waves away every offer to split it. He is generous, and he enjoys it. Quietly, it has also become who he is: the one the family leans on.

Then one winter he loses his job. At the next family meal, someone else pays. Nobody says a word. Yet he drives home strangely shaken. He had not known how much of himself was sitting in that gesture.

This ayah describes Allah with a phrase that cuts beneath such a moment: He feeds, and is not fed. The commentaries take feeding as the plainest case of all provision. Food is singled out, one explains, because every creature's need for it is the most pressing. He provides for His creation and needs nothing from it.

Here is the ego's quiet ambition. We want to be the feeder. We want to be needed, the one whose absence would leave the table hungry. There is real goodness in providing. But the pride inside it imagines the provision began with us. Every meal he paid for was grown, rained on and ripened by Someone else. He only carried it from the till to the table.

Does Allah, then, want our worship the way a host wants gratitude? The ayah's own words answer. He is not fed. Another ayah says it outright: I do not want provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me (51:57). Nothing we bring Him becomes His food.

The man who stops needing to be the provider loses nothing real. He simply sits down at the table as a guest, which is what he always was. That is humility, and it is also relief.
