Ash-Shu'ara 26:24
قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُم مُّوقِنِينَ
“[Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."”
Saheeh International
Essence
Asked what the Lord of the worlds is, Musa names all above, below and between, and asks if his hearers are certain of anything.
A reflection
The drone keeps climbing
A man buys a drone to film his land. He has worked thirty years for it: the house, the paddocks, the new barn with his initials over the door. He launches it from the lawn and watches the screen. At fifty metres the estate fills the frame, and he feels a quiet pride. At two hundred metres the neighbours' fields appear around it. At four hundred, the motorway, the town, a reservoir he had never noticed. Then cloud. When the drone comes down he says nothing for a while. Nothing on the ground has changed. Only the height of the camera has.
Musa's answer works like that climb. Pharaoh had told his people he knew of no god for them besides himself (28:38). Now he asks, with contempt: and what is this Lord of the worlds? Musa does not argue about Egypt. He lifts the camera. Rabbu s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍi wa mā baynahumā: Lord of the heavens, the earth and all between. The commentators unpack the frame. The upper world with its fixed stars and moving planets. The lower world with its seas and deserts, mountains, trees, animals and fruit. And between them, the air, the birds, everything the sky holds. Then the line that settles it: all of it are His servants, humbled before Him.
Notice also what Musa leaves out. He does not list his credentials. He has not yet shown a single miracle. He does not mention himself at all. The answer is pure scale, and measured against it, a throne is a barn with initials over the door.
This is not a put-down aimed only at an ancient king. The ego builds small estates in everyone: a reputation, a department, a corner of the family where our word is final. Pride lives at fifty metres. The ayah keeps climbing until the estate is a speck, and the speck is still His. Being humbled this way is not humiliation. It is relief: the weight of being the biggest thing in view was never ours to carry.
