Ash-Shu'ara 26:28

قَالَ رَبُّ ٱلْمَشْرِقِ وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ إِن كُنتُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ

“[Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."”

Saheeh International

Essence

Called mad, Musa gives his plainest proof yet: the Lord of every sunrise and sunset, and of every hour between, if only you would reason.

A reflection

A border at al-ʿArish, and a sun that ignores it

Pharaoh's court believed their king was lord. One early commentary notes a plain fact about that lordship. It stopped at al-ʿArish, the frontier town of Egypt. Beyond it, other kings ruled other people.

Musa's answer took the map away. The Lord he spoke of owns the place where the sun comes up and the place where it goes down. He owns everything the light crosses in between. Another commentator voices it as Musa speaking to Pharaoh directly. Your rule covers one country, and outside it your word means nothing. Even inside it, people die whom you would have kept alive.

Picture a regional sales director with a framed territory map behind her desk. She is proud of it, and she has earned that. Every morning the sun climbs over her patch and over every rival's patch in the same few minutes. It asks none of them. It is late for none of them.

That is where the ego is quietly measured. Most of us run some small territory: a team, a household, a reputation, a group chat where our word carries. The temptation is Pharaoh's in miniature. We start to feel that our patch is the world, and our say the final say.

The ayah does not sneer at that director or at the reader. It simply puts the sunrise next to the map, and lets the map look small. Humility here is not self-hatred. It is accuracy. The east and the west belong to Someone, and it is not me.

Notice, too, that Allah has no need of the court's agreement. The sun rose on the morning Pharaoh denied Him, as on every morning before. His lordship was never a claim waiting for votes. Musa names it for the listeners' sake, not for His. It was a fact waiting to be noticed.
