Ash-Shu'ara 26:45
فَأَلْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ عَصَاهُ فَإِذَا هِىَ تَلْقَفُ مَا يَأْفِكُونَ
“Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.”
Saheeh International
Essence
They swore by Pharaoh's might and made ropes look alive; Musa swore by nothing, threw his staff, and the whole overturned show was swallowed.
A reflection
Sworn by Pharaoh's might, answered without an oath
One ayah earlier, the magicians threw their ropes and staffs and took an oath. Bi-ʿizzati Firʿawn: by the might of Pharaoh, we will surely be the winners (26:44). Neither of the other tellings of this contest records that oath.
Then comes this ayah, and it holds no oath at all. Musa threw his staff. That is the whole sentence on his side. No slogan, no patron's name, no promise of victory. And at once it was swallowing what they had faked.
One classical commentator heard their oath as the habit of people who say, after any success, that it came by the blessing of so-and-so. They hung their confidence on a man's might. The ayah lets that might stand in full view, then shows what it was worth.
Picture a junior barrister who opens every submission the same way. 'As my head of chambers has often argued…' He names the great man three times before lunch. Eventually the judge leans forward. Thank you, she says, but what is your argument? The famous name was never evidence. It was a place to hide.
The ego loves to borrow height. We name the firm, the family, the follower count, the teacher we once sat with. We swear by someone's might because our own feels too small. The ayah shrinks that vanity by contrast. The one who truly had might behind him did not mention it.
Elsewhere the Quran settles where might belongs: 'to Allah belongs all might, and to His Messenger and to the believers' (63:8). Musa did not need to say it. The staff said it for him.
Does Allah display His power like this because He wants applause? The scene answers that too. He showed it to a hall of people who had sworn by someone else. The first to benefit were the magicians themselves. Allah gains nothing from a swallowed rope. The people watching got their eyes back.
So when you feel the urge to quote your backer before you speak, pause. Say what is true, plainly, and leave the might with its Owner.
