Ash-Shu'ara · Makki · ayah 62 of 227
Ash-Shu'ara 26:62
قَالَ كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّ مَعِىَ رَبِّى سَيَهْدِينِ
“[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."”
Saheeh International
Essence
At the sea's edge, the army in sight, Musa answers 'we are overtaken' with three things: a refusal, a presence and a promised road.
A reflection
Not a mood, but a refusal with reasons
Ask most people what this ayah is saying and you will hear something like: stay positive, God has got this. Musa is pictured as serene, the calm man smiling at the waves. The sentence is easy to quote in that spirit, and often is.
That reading is half right. The missing half matters.
Start with the first word. Kallā is not 'don't worry'. One commentary calls it a restraint, a pushing back against what they had said. It turns them towards Allah's arrangement, which suffices beyond Musa's own. It refuses a verdict. It does not soothe a feeling.
Then ask what the refusal rests on. The commentators answer with one voice. Musa spoke from trust in a promise already given. One records his meaning: Allah commanded me to bring you here, and He does not break His appointment. Another: He promised me this, and His promise is not broken. This is not mood. It is memory.
Nor is it denial. Musa saw the same dust they saw. He did not say there was no army. He said the army would not have the last word.
Then look at what he claims. Not that nothing bad will happen. Not that the army will vanish. He claims a presence and guidance. Sa-yahdīni: He will guide me. Guidance means a road. He asks for a way through, not for the danger to be unreal.
Picture a motivational poster on the wall of a job centre waiting room: 'Good vibes only'. Beneath it sits a man just told his benefit is suspended. The poster is not wrong to want him hopeful. It simply has nothing to give him: no reason, no promise, no next step.
Musa's sentence has all three. A refusal: this is not how it ends. A reason: my Lord is with me. A next step: He will guide me.
So the ayah is not a feeling to imitate. It is a conclusion drawn from what Allah has already said, spoken at the sea's edge, where conclusions are hardest to draw.
