Ash-Shu'ara 26:8
إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً ۖ وَمَا كَانَ أَكْثَرُهُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ
“Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.”

Essence
The sign stands complete; that most refuse it has been the shape of every prophet's story, and is no fault in the sign.
A reflection
Eight times the same closing line
For twelve Eids she has carried plates of food to the neighbours on her street. Each one has a small card explaining what the day means. The plates come back washed, with thanks. In twelve years, one neighbour has asked a single question about it. This year, stacking the cards, she wonders what she is doing wrong.
Ash-Shu'ara opens with someone carrying a far heavier version of that question. In its third ayah the Prophet ﷺ is told he may almost destroy himself with grief because people will not believe. What follows is the surah's answer, and it comes in the shape of a single sentence repeated.
This ayah is its first appearance. Inna fī dhālika la-āyah, wa mā kāna aktharuhum muʾminīn: surely in that is a sign, yet most of them were not believers. Here it closes the sign of the growing earth. Then the surah tells seven stories. Musa and Pharaoh. Ibrahim and his father's people. Nuh. Hud and ʿAd. Salih and Thamud. Lut. Shuʿayb and the people of the thicket. Every one of them ends with these exact words (26:67, 103, 121, 139, 158, 174, 190).
Think what that does to a grieving messenger. The sea split for Musa, and most did not believe. Nuh preached for generations, and most did not believe. The pattern is not a sign that you have failed. It is the ordinary shape of every prophet's story before yours. One commentator sets this passage beside another ayah: most people will not believe, however keenly you want it (12:103).
This is a strange kind of comfort, but a real one. Your duty was the message, delivered clearly. The response was never placed in your hands. The woman with the plates has done her part well. Twelve years of cards have been read on that street. Some of the greatest prophets would have recognised the ratio.
