Ash-Shu'ara 26:9
وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَهُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
“And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.”
Saheeh International
Essence
After every story of ruin and rescue one sentence returns: the Lord nothing can overpower is the Lord whose mercy still holds the door open.
A reflection
He, and no one else, holds both
Every night, once the children are asleep, she opens the same website. It lists company filings. Her former business partner left with the client list, the savings and the name they built together. His new firm is doing well. She reads its accounts line by line. In her head she rehearses the speech she will make when he finally falls.
Now listen to how this ayah is built. It does not simply say that your Lord is mighty and merciful. It puts three locks on the door. Inna, indeed. La-, truly. Then huwa, He: a pronoun that seals the description to Him alone. He, and no one else, is the Mighty, the Merciful.
That small huwa takes two jobs off our desks. The first is the avenger's job. The ego would love to be al-ʿAzīz in its own story, the one who finally wins. The second is the rescuer's job. Pride would also like to decide whose mercy settles who is spared. It wants both roles at once.
The surah opened with a man almost destroyed by grief over people who would not believe (26:3). This first refrain is spoken to him. It does not tell him to stop caring. It tells him whose hands hold the ending.
Notice what each name would be alone. Might alone is a fist. Mercy alone, one classical commentator warns, could be mistaken for weakness, as though He spared people because He could not stop them. Mercy that flows from complete power lands with far greater weight.
The woman at the laptop may still pursue what is rightly hers. That is not arrogance. But the speech in her head belongs to Someone else. When she closes the website she is not losing. She is handing the case to the only One who holds both names, and holds them perfectly.
