An-Naml 27:21

“I will surely punish him with a severe punishment or slaughter him unless he brings me clear authorization."[1075]”

Essence

A furious king swears to punish an absent bird, then writes his own exit into the oath: unless the bird brings a clear proof.

A reflection

A sentence with the door left open

Sulayman's sentence is built like a verdict. There are two oaths, each sealed with the heaviest emphasis in Arabic. I will punish him severely, or I will slaughter him. Then a third clause slips in, wearing the same grammar: or he will bring me a clear authority.

A rhetorical commentary notices what this does. The three are joined by "or", so the oath comes down to one of them happening. If the proof arrives, there is no punishment and no slaughter. If it does not, one of the two follows. The king has sworn, in effect, to listen before he acts.

Picture a hotel night manager at two in the morning. A porter has been gone from the desk for forty minutes. She opens the disciplinary form and types his name. Then the lift doors open. He is holding the arm of an elderly guest in a dressing gown, found wandering on the seafront. The form is never sent. She had left herself room to be wrong, and it spared her an injustice.

The Companions knew this shape well. Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim report that Abu Musa turned away from ʿUmar's door after asking permission three times. ʿUmar called him back and demanded proof that the Prophet ﷺ had taught this, or he would act against him. Abu Musa came back with a witness, and the matter ended there. In one wording ʿUmar explained himself: he had heard something new and wanted to be sure.

Anger in a leader is not the failure here. Sulayman had reason to be displeased: a post in his ranks had been left empty without leave. The failure would be a sentence with no exit. Write your consequences firmly if you must. But write the third clause into every one of them: unless there is something I have not yet been told.
