An-Naml · Makki · ayah 48 of 93
An-Naml 27:48
وَكَانَ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ تِسْعَةُ رَهْطٍ يُفْسِدُونَ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَا يُصْلِحُونَ
“And there were in the city nine family heads causing corruption in the land and not amending [its affairs].”
Saheeh International
Essence
Nine men in Salih's city spoiled the land and mended nothing, and a whole people followed where so few led.
A reflection
Nine was enough
Seven parents meet in a primary school hall one January. Too many children are arriving hungry. They have no budget and no plan, only a borrowed toaster. They start a breakfast club on two mornings a week. Two years later, teachers say the whole school's mornings have changed. Lateness has fallen. Fights in the playground have eased. The school has four hundred pupils. Seven people moved it.
The ayah shows the same arithmetic running the other way. Tisʿatu rahṭin: nine men. Not an army, not a council of hundreds. Nine, in a city of many thousands. And the commentaries agree that they steered it.
One narration-based commentary explains why so few could hold so much. They were the great men and chiefs of Thamud, and so they prevailed over its affairs. They called their people to misguidance and to denying Salih. Another describes them as among the most prominent, the richest, and from the sons of the nobility. One suggests each of them had his own band following behind him.
So nine was never really nine. Each was a hinge on which a door of people swung. When they agreed, a city moved.
Two lessons sit in that number, one for each direction. The first is a warning. Never assume a bad direction needs a majority. A handful of determined people with standing can carry a whole community, while everyone else is busy or polite.
The second is an invitation. The same arithmetic works for good. Seven parents with a toaster are proof. If you want to change a mosque, a street or a workplace, you probably do not need everyone. You need a few people with steady purpose, and the patience to keep showing up.
Ask honestly which group of nine you belong to. Then ask which nine you are quietly following. Every city has its nine. The question is only what they are building.
