Al-Qamar 54:29

فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَ

“But they called their companion,[1585] and he dared[1586] and hamstrung [her].”

Essence

One call went out across the camp, one man reached for the blade, and the sign that fed a people fell, never to rise.

A reflection

The stone that passes from hand to hand

Five boys stand outside an empty house at dusk. One of them holds a stone. "Go on, you do it." "No, you." The stone travels from palm to palm, each boy laughing, each refusing. Then one of them takes it, steps forward and throws. Glass breaks. Every boy runs.

One classical commentator saw exactly this movement in the word taʿāṭā. He lists several readings. The man took up the tool of the killing, or took hold of the camel herself, or was paid a fee for it. Then he gives what he calls the precise sense. A terrible deed is one that everyone pushes towards his companion while clearing himself of it. The one who finally accepts it and steps forward is said to taʿāṭāhu. It is as if there had been a shoving back and forth, and he took it after the shoving.

So the form of the verb carries the whole scene. Form VI in Arabic often describes something done between several people, back and forth. Nobody in Thamūd wanted to be the one. Everybody wanted it done. The deed went round the circle like the stone, until one hand closed on it.

This is how many group wrongs happen. A spiteful complaint about a colleague is drafted by one, tightened by another, sent by a third. A rumour is started by no one and repeated by everyone. Each person can say, truthfully, that they did not do it. And yet it was done.

The ayah refuses that comfort. It says fa-nādaw: they called. Then fa-taʿāṭā: he took it up. The calling and the taking sit side by side in one breath. The boys who passed the stone and laughed were not innocent bystanders; they were the reason it flew.

Notice the deeds that go round your own circle. A message nobody wants to send, a decision nobody wants to own, a cruelty nobody wants to start. When it reaches your palm, you can still open your hand and let it drop.
