An-Naml 27:67

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ أَءِذَا كُنَّا تُرَٰبًا وَءَابَآؤُنَآ أَئِنَّا لَمُخْرَجُونَ

“And those who disbelieve say, "When we have become dust as well as our forefathers, will we indeed be brought out [of the graves]?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Asked twice in one breath, their question is a refusal dressed as a query: can dust, ours and our fathers', ever be brought out again?

A reflection

Asking twice so as not to hear

A young man drags a rusted car out of his aunt's barn. The tyres are flat and mice live in the seats. He says he will have it on the road by summer. She walks round it once. 'That? You're going to drive that? This heap?' She is not asking. Each question is a door closing.

The deniers' sentence has the same shape. A-idhā kunnā turāban … a-innā la-mukhrajūn: what, when we have become dust … what, are we really to be brought out? In the common recitation the question word comes twice, once on each half of the sentence. One classical commentary calls this denial upon denial, refusal on the heels of refusal. It is the grammar of a mind already made up.

Notice which moment they choose to describe. Another commentary points out that they did not deny only a return from dust. They denied any life after death at all, even with the body whole. They named dust because it made the denial sound strongest. Pick the most hopeless picture of a thing, and the question seems to answer itself.

That is a familiar move in any argument. We describe the other view in its weakest form, then ask, amazed, how anyone could hold it. It feels like thinking. It is closer to shutting a door.

The surah's reply is instructive. It does not shout back. It has already set out who begins creation and then repeats it (27:64). Here it simply reports their words and lets the reader hear them. A denial quoted calmly, beside the evidence, often exposes itself.

Before you ask a doubled question about someone else's belief, try stating it in its strongest form. If you cannot, you are not yet arguing with it.
